Associating a terminal session with a printer session links the two sessions together. The host dynamically assigns a device to the terminal session, and then the printer session, using the association name as identification, automatically gets the associated printer LU from the host. (Note that the host must be configured to support this option.)

To associate a 3270 Telnet terminal session with a 3270 printer session:

  1. Configure a 3270 terminal session using Telnet Extended.

    1. On the Connection menu, click Connection Setup. Enter a valid host name in the Host box, and then select TN3270E in the Protocol box. In the Host LU name box, enter the name of the host LU (logical unit) to use when the session connects to the host.

    2. Click Advanced, and in the Use TN association text box, type a string (a random string of characters can be entered here).

    3. Click OK, then Connect to start the terminal session.

  2. While the terminal session you started in step 1 is running, configure a 3270 printer session using Telnet Extended.

    1. On the Connection menu, click Connection Setup. Select TN3270E in the Protocol box.

    2. Click the Use TN association button. Select the same string that you entered in the 3270 terminal session's Use TN association box.

    3. Click Connect to start the printer session. If the printer session fails to start, ensure that the original 3270 terminal session with the correct association is running.

    4. With the printer session running, return to the 3270 terminal session that you started in step 1. All print jobs that you print from the 3270 terminal session will print in the 3270 printer session, as long as the 3270 printer session is active.

Note that both the terminal session and the printer session must be running in the same type of browser (for example, Internet Explorer) for TN association to work. A terminal session running in Internet Explorer and a printer session running in Firefox cannot be associated. (However, the sessions are not required to run in the same browser window.)
